Horizon Ultra - Smart Home Projector
The Horizon Ultra is an all-in-one living room projector that reimagines the home projection device as an architectural object rather than a purely technical appliance. Designed as a set of independent modules, the system allows users to configure and personalize the device according to their space and usage styles.

Project Overview
Initial Context
In India, projectors are increasingly being used across various sectors and domains, with a significant rise in home entertainment usage after the pandemic. In addition, most projectors now come with in-built smart OS capabilities and connectivity features.
Despite this, the category remains largely focussed on utilitarian designs that prioritize portability and technical performance over spatial integration and aesthetic value. This creates a gap between how projectors are used in modern homes and how they are designed. The idea behind this concept project was to explore how the product could be repositioned from a temporary device into a permanent living room fixture.

Projectors are increasingly being adapted across various sectors, with a significant rise in home entertainment usage post-pandemic. The projected value of the Indian projector market by 2029 is INR 188 billion, and the market is estimated to grow at 8% CAGR. Globally, the market cap is expected to reach USD 4.8 billion by 2029, growing at a rate of >15% CAGR. Upwards of 40% of all projector sales is accounted for by the home entertainment sector.

Rapid Urbanisation
Approximately 30% of Indian households reside in rented accommodations. As consumers adapt to compact homes and shared spaces, there is a growing preference for flexible and space-efficient devices. Projectors, by replacing large fixed displays and enabling adaptable screen sizes, align with this shift.

Projector Portability
Improvements in portability through reduced size, integrated batteries, wireless connectivity, and simplified setup have lowered the barrier to adoption for home users. Projectors are no longer perceived as complex, fragile, or professional-only equipment, but as mobile and accessible devices that can move easily between rooms.

Additional factors for consistent growth in this market also arises from factors such as advancements in digital as well as hardware and component technology, competitive pricing, increasing outdoor and camping usage, need for secondary televisions in households, need for a theatre-like experience, shorter relocation cycles among earning urban households, and increasingly durable, long-lasting and reliable devices.
Despite their growing presence in domestic spaces, most projectors currently available in the market are not designed with interior integration in mind. They are offered in a wide range of visually inconsistent forms, resulting in products that feel out of place within most living environments. This lack of aesthetic coherence limits their ability to blend in as a part of the home, and positions them as functional tools rather than lifestyle products.
Market Study - Insights and Findings

FINAL BRIEF
This gap between evolving consumer requirements and plateauing product architecture presents both a design and business opportunity. By repositioning the projector as a spatially aware object rather than a functional appliance, brands can expand the category beyond performance-led competition into one defined by experience, lifestyle alignment, and emotional value.

The Setting
Ideal for dynamic living setups, especially early-stage households and rental spaces wherein flexibility, portability, and spatial adaptability are essential, without compromise on the aesthetics.

Projector as a Part of Home Decor
This final project brief was to explore how a modular, decor-led projection system can appeal not only to tech-forward users, but also to design-conscious consumers seeking products that contribute aesthetically and meaningfully to their living spaces.
High-Tech Parts & Components
Network & Bluetooth Connectivity
Conceptualisation
The ideation diverged into multiple directions - monolithic structures that cater to specific needs, plant-based motifs that hold the entire structure vertically, and other dynamic modules that fluidly adapt to the requirement of having to blend in with the interior aesthetic of any given household.

Most of the module-based references were centered around vertically stacked cylindrical forms, as this configuration helps improve efficiency in the concept’s execution.

Some consolidated device references revolved around vertical column housings, combining all items into a single portable unit.
Horizon Ultra - The Concept

The Horizon Ultra is propositioned as a modular home projection system designed to function as both an entertainment device and a deco element within the living space. Rather than presenting as a single monolithic device, the system is designed as a modular arrangement, closer to a piece of furniture or lighting than traditional consumer electronics.
The modularity enables flexibility across different contexts, from immersive movie nights to ambient lighting and background audio; all while maintaining a consistent identity within any living room.
With its sleek and elegant form factor, the horizon is designed to blend into everyday environments with subtlety and intention. Through this approach, the product repositions projection from a purely technical interaction into a holistic lifestyle experience.

The Modules
THE STAND

The Stand functions as the core element that holds the system in place. The modules are designed to attach on to the top of the column using power-transfer pogo pins, and they are held in place mechanically.

The base component houses essential electronics, including LED indicators and charging ports. The core can be placed on the ground independently, or can be attached on to the base module through pogo pins.

THE PROJECTOR

The Projector unit consists of the central optical machinery, designed as a minimal form that integrates seamlessly into the overall composition. The backside of this module comprises of speakers for independent usage as well.
THE BASE

The Base is the electrical foundation of the system, grounding the composition both physically and visually. It consists of a 30,000 mAh multi-cell Li-ion battery that powers the device for long hours, and two 24W speakers with a thumper providing high quality audio, along with its controls.
THE AMBIENT LAMP

The Ambient Lighting module allows the system to exist as decor artifact even when projection is inactive. It comes built-in with multiple light modes and colors, providing the architectural aspect of the system that balances function and aesthetics.

The materials are selected to communicate warmth and permanence. Metallic and satin finishes reduce visual noise and reflections, and the subtle color palettes allow the device to integrate with a wide range of interiors. The system is designed to age gracefully within a home, becoming part of its environment.

Each module performs a distinct function while contributing to a cohesive visual language that emphasizes balance and proportion. This allows the projector to remain an integral part of the home even when not actively in use, solidifying its role from as a permanent spatial fixture with its own charm and characteristics.
